Class Descriptions

1. Leadership Approaches and P2 Identifies different approaches to leadership and their associated benefits, drawbacks, and implications for effective public processes. Attendees identify and discuss their own approaches and those of others in their organizations/work teams.
2. Organizational and Team Effectiveness Reviews the internal dynamics necessary for organizational and team effectiveness for public processes. Attendees assess positive and negative organizational and team dynamics and identify strategies for enhancing positive/resolving negative dynamics.
3. Strategic Visioning and Planning for P2 Discusses a variety of approaches for strategic visioning, planning and problem-solving processes and the appropriate application for each. Reviews and discusses the uses of various strategies for engagement, including deliberation, conflict resolution, decision-making and empowerment. Emphasizes the external dynamics and the short- and long-term perspectives necessary for successful leadership in a P2 environment. Attendees each lead a mock team visioning process using one of the several visioning approaches reviewed in the class.
4. Leadership Ethics This class focuses on the ethical basis that guides Leaders today. Several professional ethical codes that relate to public participation are identified and the strategic, practical and personal implications for Leaders are discussed. Participants consider their own ethical and moral guidelines and how they relate to their own leadership approach to public processes.
5. Personal Leadership and Effectiveness This small-group capstone class provides a vital opportunity for Leaders to identify and explore individual strengths and weaknesses as Leaders. Attendees consider strategies for further personal and professional development as Leaders, including relational, problem-solving, strategic and systemic strategies. Using assessment tools, participants develop a personal Leadership Action Plan with proposed milestones and metrics.
6. The Role and Use of Judgment This class considers the role and uses of judgment by Leaders in four kinds of processes: decision-making, deliberation, social change and conflict resolution. Class attendees consider the appropriate use of judgment in these processes and its relationship to Leadership, and develop personal strategies for each of the four process types.
